ICANN Rejects Move to Privatize .Org Domain

The Net Company for Assigned Names and Figures (ICANN), the non-profit organization that oversees the internet’s area identify program, has blocked a proposal to provide the .org area to personal equity agency Ethos Funds for more than $one billion.

The .org area registry is operate by the Public Fascination Registry (PIR), a non-profit subsidiary of Net Culture, yet another non-profit. Ethos Funds was proposing to invest in the PIR from the Net Culture. Underneath the terms of the offer, the PIR would have taken on $360 million in credit card debt to support finance the transaction.
